An American victory at Indianapolis on September
14th would mark the perfect conclusion to MotoGP´s debut at the Brickyard, and `Texan Tornado´ Colin Edwards sees no reason why he can´t be the man grabbing the headlines.
The Tech 3 Yamaha rider has stepped up to the podium on two occasions in 2008 and, with only the bare minimum of track time with which to prepa
re the 800cc machines for the race, Edwards belie
ves that he could have the chance of sticking with
the likes of Valentino Rossi and Casey Stoner.
`If things go right, then there´s every bit a possibil
ity of winning the race,´ said the American in a teleconference earlier this week. ` Nobody knows it, man. I think that´s maybe in our advantage, to be honest with you; nobody knowing the track, nobody having their setups down. I´ve generally been good showing up at a track and getting everything sorted out quickly, so that´s w
hat we´re looking for.´
Edwards is one of the few riders to have already visited the famous circuit, having been invited to attend the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard after the Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix in July. The MotoGP man was taken aback by the track, and l
eft impressed and motivated for next weekend.
`I thought, OK, you know, it´s right after Laguna, I´m going to have to end my vacation time, interrupt it, I thought at least I get to catch up with (Jimmy) Johnson and (Jeff) Gordon and say hey; I haven´t seen them in a few years. Onc
e I got there, I kind of forgot about why I was there,´ explained Edwards.
`I thought, ‘Holy moly, this place is unbelievable.' Once you get over the awe factor, then it´s cool. But, you know, at the same time you´ve got
to think about some of the places that we go that have unbelievable facilities. Indy is just on a very large scale, of course. But it´s cool to see. You know, growing up my whole life watching the Indy 500 and actually be there on the front straight, I thought, ‘This is pretty cool.'
Edwards will be one of four American riders competing at the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix, accompanied by 2006 World Champion Nicky Hayden, Kawasaki star John Hopkins and Rizla Suzki wildcard Ben Spies.
