In 1986 the Catalan Parliament gave it`s permission for Catalunya to have its very own Racing Circuit, although it wasn`t until early 1989 that a consortium was set up.

Work finally began on the racing circuit in February 1989 with completion set for September 1991, the first race to take place at this new circuit did not happen to be a motorbike race but the Spanish Touring Car Championship. In fact the World Motorcycling Championship did not actually take place until 1992, and three years later the race changed its name to the Catalan Grand Prix, which today is widely known as the Catalunya MotoGP.

The circuit is another favourite place for the many motogp riders to come and familiarise themselves with the track, as the circuits boasts at least 13 corners and a particularly long fast straight, which is ideal for the Formula 1 drivers and the Motogp riders to test out their machines.

A sign of the popularity of Motogp, is the fact that at least 100,000 fans travel from all over to support their riders and teams.Catalunya is fantastic for the spectator as it has at least 17 grandstands situated around the circuit and another 23 giant screens, to be able to watch even more of the action as it unfolds.
