Rossi's lap of 1m 59.727s was close to Casey Stoner's previous record lap of the Malaysian circuit set in 2012, which was eclipsed this morning by Repsol Honda world champion Marc Marquez.
It was Rossi's fastest ever lap at Sepang and the Italian legend was in high spirits at the end of the third and final day.
“The test has been very good, I'm very happy, especially for the second position and more than that for the lap time which is the best of my career in Sepang,” said Rossi.
“It's the first time under 2'00 for me and just one tenth from Marc and the overall record of the track. I found a good feeling with the bike, we found some good solutions and it's been very positive.
“I have modified my riding style a bit so I am not stressing the tyres too much on the edge. With one year more experience of this M1 I can work on these details. Before I wasn't at the limit of the bike and I had to concentrate on other things. Now I feel good.
“We also worked a lot on the fuel consumption. The bike is a bit more difficult to ride, a bit more nervous, but for my riding style it is not a big problem.
“We tried a race simulation in the afternoon that was very good to understand any problems. We suffered a bit to keep a good pace, but it wasn't so bad. Marquez was a lot faster but he did his simulation in the morning when the track is faster.
“Now we have to work to improve our pace in the first laps of the race, like Jorge was able to do last year. I am not able to use all the potential of the new tyres but after that my pace is constant and not so bad.”
